Legion's Third Season Will Be its Last

FX's Legion might just be the best-reviewed television series based on a comic book, often getting glowing praise from critics for its smart writing, realistic portrayal of mental health, and visually-stunning scenes. The first two seasons showed what an X-Men spinoff could be like without the shackles of continuity, giving us one of the most complex comic book shows out there.

This is why it's sad to know that season 3 will be the series' finale.

During the Television Critics Association winter press tour (via Variety), FX CEO John Landgraf revealed that Legion season 3 would be the show's final season. Apparently, the show is not being canceled as Landgraf has stated that showrunner Noah Hawley originally envisioned the series to have three seasons. That might sound like a convenient excuse but we'll just have to wait for the final season and see if it feels that way.

Legion was actually renewed for a third season back in June, so knowing that this will be the final season is kind of sad. The series has changed drastically throughout its two seasons, with the second season's finale turning the title character into a villain, while Syd Barrett takes the protagonist role.

Now that the lead character is starting to resemble his comic book counterpart, minus the crazy hair, it will be interesting seeing his downfall. That's usually how all the gritty shows end so we can only assume this will happen. Then again, Legion has never really followed anyone's rules so the ending could be unpredictable.

No return date for Legion has been announced.
