Legendary X-Men Writer Explains How to Bring the Mutants Into the MCU

Marvel fans have been itching to see the X-Men finally make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe ever since word broke out that Disney was trying to acquire 21st Century Fox's film and television assets.

Now that Disney's completed its merger with the company, the mutant's integration into the franchise is only a matter of time.

Hoping to see the X-Men fit right into Marvel's comic book movie franchise, legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont has decided to give a few tips on how to bring the mutants into the MCU.

The legendary comic book writer who is known for his 16-year run on the X-Men comic book franchise just recently spoke with Newsarama, and during the interview with the entertainment news outlet, Claremont talked about the stories that he would want to see in a movie at Marvel.

According to the comic book writer, the best way to approach Marvel's reboot of the X-Men is to return to the Dark Phoenix narrative.

"I'll explain. The challenge with X-Men is, if you notice how Marvel produced the Avengers films, they set them in motion with solo films – Iron Man, Thor, Captain America – then you had them come together for Avengers. So the audience gradually fell in love with the characters and the world those characters inhabit over a series of stories," Claremont began.

This can't be done for the X-Men since everyone's narrative sort of comes together.

"You have to find a way to bring Xavier's school and the X-Men to the screen in a unified concept while also building the world piece-by-piece so the audience falls in love with it the same way," the writer expounds.

"For me as a storyteller, the ideal way to do that would be following HBO's lead with Game of Thrones, where you take 12 episodes – in other words, 12 issues – and you create the world and introduce the characters, and let the audience fall in love with them as you go along."

While it is true that the X-Men franchise might be better off trying different formats aside from the big screen, we know that Marvel has yet to introduce the idea of mutants into the MCU. Claremont has to consider the established narrative that Marvel has built for itself, and how to work around that so that the introduction of the X-Men would make sense to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
