It seems that 2024 is going to be the year of Kaiju No. 8. Aside from the long-awaited anime adaptation’s premiere, Kaiju No. 8 is also getting a new spinoff manga that will be illustrated by Super Smartphone’s co-creator.

At Jump Festa 2024 this weekend, the Kaiju No. 8 anime’s new trailer was the highlight of the series’ stage event. Along with the trailer, fans were also treated to news of a spinoff manga that will follow other characters.

For this spinoff, series creator Naoya Matsumoto will be joined by Keiji Ando. These two will team up with the illustrator Kentarou Hidano.

Shonen Jump launched the Super Smartphone manga by writer Hiroki Tomisawa and illustrator Kentarou Hidano in May 2022. Sadly, the series suffered the same fate as other Jump titles like PPPPPP as it was axed after just half a year.

Finally, Hidano is making a Jump comeback, though this time, his talents are being enlisted for the upcoming Kaiju No. 8 spinoff.

Titled Kaiju No. 8 side B, this spinoff won’t follow the main characters Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro. Instead, it will tell the story of other members of the Defense Force who are on the frontline.

The main manga follows characters who play key roles within the Defense Force in the fight against the powerful and destructive Kaiju.

Not a lot of details were shared about the spinoff, but it should flesh out the world as it will give fans more insight into the experiences of the Defense Force members on the ground.

Alongside Spy x Family and Dandadan, Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 is considered one of the big three Shonen Jump+ titles thanks to their popularity and number of readers.

Thus, Production I.G’s upcoming Kaiju No. 8 adaptation is one of the most highly anticipated shonen titles of 2024.

To promote the show’s premiere even more, a new trailer was released, which highlights more major characters from the Defense Force. Check it out here:

The Kaiju No. 8 anime will premiere in the Spring 2024 season alongside shows like Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc and My Hero Academia Season 7.

For fans who can’t wait to see the show, they’ll at least have the manga spinoff to tide them over. That’s because the Kaiju No. 8 side B manga will be released on January 5, 2024, on Shonen Jump+.
