In Jujutsu Kaisen, Fumi is Nobara's childhood friend, and she has a key role in the second season's 19th episode — but where is she now? Do we have any indication as to what happened to her?

Fumi's Appearances in Jujutsu Kaisen So Far
Fumi, Nobara's childhood friend, only appears in a flashback when Nobara is close to death.
We discover that Fumi couldn't fit in in her and Nobara's small village. Nobara, who hated the village and thought its inhabitants were crazy, defended and befriended Fumi.
Nobara's dream to move away intensified when the two girls met the older Saori, whom Nobara idolized.
Eventually, Saori was ostracized, leading her to leave the village, while Nobara left to study in Tokyo, promising Fumi that they would meet again with Saori.
Before half her face explodes, Nobara feels regretful for not being able to fulfill her promise to Fumi.
Interestingly, the flashback is mostly told from Fumi, rather than Nobara's point of view, which makes us wonder what happened to her.
Did Fumi Die?
While Fumi's whereabouts aren't known, it is often said that when someone dies, their life passes before their eyes. This causes some fans to think that Fumi also died when Nobara did since she's the one narrating the flashback.
In Jujutsu Kaisen, people often hallucinate or experience flashbacks before dying. Nanami, for instance, vividly saw his dream destination, Malaysia, in his final moments.
But how did Fumi die? Some fans theorize that her soul was so close to Nobara's that she also became affected by Mahito's attack.
Of course, this is far-fetched. If Fumi did die, it was probably for an unrelated reason, such as a curse.
What we consider more likely is that Nobara's intense final thoughts of her past caused Fumi to think about her.
After all, it was confirmed that Saori thought about Nobara at the time of the latter's death, wondering how she was doing.
In folk belief, thinking of someone intensely can have an actual effect, and this is probably the most likely explanation for Fumi's flashback.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Where Is Fumi Now?
So far, Fumi has not returned in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga (which is way ahead of the anime), so we think seeing her again is unlikely.
That being said, some readers believe that even if Nobara is dead, Fumi could eventually leave the village and meet Saori again, fulfilling her friend's wish.
Alternatively, if Nobara is alive but permanently incapacitated, she and Fumi could reunite, but it seems increasingly unlikely.
