Jon Favreau Details How Skeleton Crew Fits Within the Star Wars Universe

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is set in the New Republic era where “a group of kids lost in the Star Wars galaxy try to find their way home.”

In that sense, Jon Favreau detailed how each series they've previously released fits within the franchise.

In a recent interview on Entertainment Weekly’s podcast, Dagobah Dispatch, Favreau elaborated how Star Wars series connect with each other, in spite of having various directors and filmmakers working on them.

“One of the things we really like about what the shows we’ve been working on have turned into is that the tone of each episode — and in certain cases, each series — really reflects the storyteller of the filmmaker,” Favreau explained.

“So, in The Mandalorian, you could have many different tones. Even though the writing is consistent across them, different filmmakers will bring different perspectives.” Favreau added.

Favreau then shared how Skeleton Crew fits the bill alongside its predecessors:

“With Skeleton Crew, I would go even further there because it’s [Jon] Watts and [Chris] Ford and a whole array of wonderful directors.” Favreau said.

“Some have worked with us before, some who haven’t. And so each episode has its own feel to it.”

Favreau shared: “It’s interesting too, as you see at the Star Wars Celebration panel, and these great trailers, how different they all are. But they all sit together.”

“You would never group them together, but thanks to the world that George created, they all feel like they share a common underlying aesthetic.” He said.

Favreau ended his interview by describing how Star Wars is NOT a genre, but rather a genre filled with a number of subgenres:

“When people think of Star Wars as a genre, it really is a number of subgenres within the Star Wars genre. Because those were [George Lucas’] influences,” the filmmaker explained.

He then added: “So it could feel Western, it could feel like a World War II film, or a samurai film. And so [from there], you could push limits.”

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is expected to hit Disney+ later this year.
