Jon Bernthal is slated to reprise the role of The Punisher in the upcoming MCU series Daredevil: Born Again. He last played the fan-favorite character in The Punisher series on Netflix which ran for two seasons.

While a lot of fans were delighted to hear his return, they were also surprised that the character is being integrated officially into the MCU since he is known for his violent personality, which is in contrast to the franchise's usual family-friendly tone

However, considering that the MCU is starting to embrace the TV-MA rating for its TV shows (as evidenced by Echo) and introduced the "Marvel Spotlight" banner that focuses on street-level stories, they now have an avenue to bring back The Punisher into the fold and retain his true form.

In an interview with Collider, Jon Bernthal discussed his upcoming return as The Punisher and shared his goal on how he'll make sure that he will retain the integrity of the source material.

"I think there’s a reason why that character has resonated as deeply and strongly as he has. In the hearts and minds of comic book fans and first responders and people in the military and people all over the globe," he said.

"I think there’s a little bit of Frank Castle in everybody. He exists very strongly inside me and I care about that character deeply.

Bernthal continued, "I also know that it’s absolutely essential that if we do it, we do it right and we have real sacred integrity to the source material and to what is at the core of Frank. I’m gonna do my absolute best to make sure that, if and when we do it, we do it right."

Given that Marvel Studios has now embraced the TV-MA tone for its Disney+ shows, they won't have any trouble at all exploring the character's violent background and they'll be able to follow the source material without any sacrifices or adjusting to the usual family-friendly tone of the MCU.

It is exciting to see what they have in store for the Punisher's return now that he is officially integrated into the MCU's Sacred Timeline and how far they'll go in exploring his mature tone within the Disney+ realm.

The Punisher is available to stream on Disney+.
