American singer and actress Jessica Simpson had opened up about the time when she finally decided to change her life. The 41-year-old singer posted a throwback photo of herself on Twitter on Monday with a lengthy comment thread that described her struggles and how she ended up finally giving up alcohol and drugs.

Jessica Simpson Looked Distraught In A Throwback Photo

In the photo, the “Public Affair” singer is seen visibly distraught, wearing a pink tracksuit and without makeup. Simpson captioned the photo with the date it was taken, on Nov. 1, 2017. Simpson said the person in the photo was an “unrecognizable version” of the person she is now.

Simpson said that it was at that very moment that she knew that she had to change her life and take back her “light.”

“I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self-respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity," Simpson said in the caption.

Simpson said that it was during that time that she knew she had to give up alcohol because it not only kept her from achieving her goals but also because she was just “exhausted.”

The “Dukes of Hazzard” actress added several comments to the thread, describing how she wanted to “feel the pain” to overcome it. She said the only way she could move forward was to stop looking back with regret and remorse over her past choices.

Simpson also commented that she couldn’t believe that it had already been four years since she gave up drinking. She said it only felt like two years since she made that life-changing decision. Simpson commented on the existing stigma that surrounds alcoholics and alcoholism.

In her memoir, titled “Open Book,” Simpson has publicly opened up about her dependence on alcohol and prescription drugs. The book, published in February 2020, also detailed her experience with sexual abuse as a child. She also talked in length about the pressures she felt to lose weight, which resulted in her having body image issues.

Simpson admitted in comments made to her latest photo that the problem she faced wasn’t about drinking but was mostly about her. She said that she didn’t love and respect herself during that time.

"I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do… I have made nice with the fears, and I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad,” Simpson said.

In her final comments, Simpson said that she no longer feels that way and that she had made her peace with the parts of her life that were “just sad.” She ended the thread with the caption, “I am free.”
