Javier Bardem Shares Daughter's Awesome Reaction to His Little Mermaid Casting

There is little doubt that Javier Bardem was thrilled to be cast as King Triton in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Not surprisingly, his young daughter was just as delighted and had an awesome reaction to the casting.

Javier Bardem and his Little Mermaid co-star Melissa McCarthy recently spoke to Collider where they admitted they both wanted to be cast as King Triton and Ursula, respectively. Bardem then shared how he had actively reached out to director Rob Marshall about the casting.

"I sent a text saying, 'I would love to play King Triton if there's such a thing as a King Triton with a Spanish accent,'" he admitted.

"He was in the grocery store shopping, and said, 'We were talking about you,' and I said, 'Really?'" Bardem shared. He then revealed how his daughter reacted to the casting.

"My daughter was there and I was so excited, and she said, 'What's going on?' 'I may be in The Little Mermaid!' And she said – she was seven – 'Are you gonna play Ariel?'" he recalled.

It's an adorable and hilarious reaction and McCarthy pointed out that she would actually want to watch a version of The Little Mermaid where Javier Bardem plays Ariel. It's certainly an awesome idea but we're still glad that Disney decided to cast Halle Bailey instead.

The Little Mermaid will be a remake of the animated Disney classic and will feature the original music along with some new songs. It is directed by Rob Marshall and stars Halle Bailey as Ariel.

The film will also feature Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula. The movie is set to premiere in theaters on May 26, 2023.
