James Gunn Shares Promising Update on Ta-Nehisi Coates' Superman Movie

James Gunn's Superman: Legacy is set to kick off the rebooted DCU franchise under the new DC Studios. The project is currently in pre-production and it is expected that we will hear more updates about it in the coming months ahead of its production start next year.

However, there is also another Superman project that is currently in the works at Warner Bros. which is the J.J. Abrams-produced project that is written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. So far, it is still in the development stage and the studio has not shelved it yet.

Fans have been wondering about the status of the project and whether the movie will actually happen with all the incoming changes in the DC franchise which also has a Superman movie of their own.

Speaking with io9 recently, Gunn, who also serves as the co-chairman of DC Studios, was asked for updates on Coates' Superman movie where he assured that the project is still in the works and revealed that it is likely going to be part of the DC Elseworlds slate.

"Those two things are totally unrelated. That’s an exciting movie. I know that Chantal Nong, who is the executive on that project, is extremely excited about it," he said.

"So if it comes in and it’s great, which I haven’t read the script, and if the timing is right, that could absolutely happen. That’s totally unrelated. It would be an Elseworlds tale like Joker."

Based on Gunn's comments, it looks like those two Superman movie projects will indeed co-exist with each other and the making of Legacy will not have any effect on the development of the Coates-penned project.

As we've seen in the last couple of years, the DC Elseworlds films have been successful and it didn't affect the DCEU projects that they co-exist with. For now, let's wait and see whether Coates' Superman movie will indeed move along in the future.
