James Gunn Schools Star Wars Trolls And Tells Them To “Go To Therapy”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have tasted critical and commercial success during its release, but the film also became one of the most divisive films in the Star Wars franchise. Though many appreciated how the film took the franchise to new directions, other fans didn't quite the enjoy the way The Force Awakens sequel subverted fan expectations.

While it's understandable how some fans would find themselves upset over the film, some have been busy attacking The Last Jedi's cast and crew online, driving actress Kelly Marie Tran out of Instagram.

This isn't the only case where rabid fans pushed Star Wars actors and actresses to the edge. Earlier this week, Jar Jar Bink's actor Ahmed Best revealed how harassment almost pushed him to end his life.

Coming across Best's post on Twitter, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn decided to respond, schooling fans about the terrible effect of bullying.

Gunn's response to the bullying also seems to comment on how fans redirect their frustration towards writer/director Rian Johnson. While some have directly been acting other members of the cast and crew, many others have been putting all the blame and spewing hate on The Last Jedi's director.

While it's natural that not everyone agrees on a movie, Star Wars fans have been displaying a sense of entitlement, believing that they could make The Last Jedi better or that Johnson owes them a better story. Fans forget that like any other piece of art, films aren't made solely for the fanbase – they're made as an expression of creativity. Would you bash an artist if you didn't quite understand a painting? Would you demand they change their work of art so it can fit your sensibility?

Lucasfilm's next movie, Star Wars: Episode IX premieres December 20, 2019.
