James Bond Will Never Be A Woman, Says 007 Executive Producer

Times are certainly changing now that the new Time Lord on Doctor Who is officially a Time Lady. However, it looks like James Bond will never be portrayed by a woman, as Barbara Broccoli has confirmed.

The James Bond executive producer recently spoke to The Guardian about the possibility of the British spy getting a gender-bending makeover. Broccoli quickly put her foot down on the subject.

"Bond is male," she said. "He's a male character. He was written as a male and I think he'll probably stay as a male. And that's fine. We don't have to turn male characters into women. Let's just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters."

Broccoli certainly has a point. The character was introduced as a strong icon of masculinity that was sometimes misogynistic. However, as the James Bond 25 executive producer pointed out, 007 has evolved through the years.

"But look at the way the world has changed. And I think Bond has come through and transformed with the times. I've tried to do my part, and I think particularly with the Daniel [Craig] films, they've become much more current in terms of the way women are viewed."

Although there is no chance for a woman to play 007, Broccoli did express interest in hiring a female director to helm a future James Bond film. "Yes, absolutely," says Broccoli. "As a female producer, of course, I'd like to do that."

James Bond 25 recently lost director Danny Boyle due to "creative differences." However, they quickly hired Beasts of No Nation's Cary Fukunaga to take over. The film is expected to begin filming at Pinewoods Studios in March 2019.

The still-untitled James Bond 25 is scheduled for release on February 14, 2020.
