KonoSuba is finally back with a new season, but those who have been away from the series may be asking if KonoSuba: Legend of Crimson is canon.
Along with its canon status, some are also wondering if the movie is required viewing before watching season 3.
The Legend of Crimson movie was released back in 2019, and it featured Kazuma and his party journeying to Megumin’s hometown after receiving a letter from Yunyun.

What Happened in the KonoSuba: Legend of Crimson Movie?
KonoSuba is an anime based on the light novel series by Natsume Akatsuki. The first two seasons aired in winter 2016 and winter 2017, respectively.
Meanwhile, the KonoSuba: Legend of Crimson movie was released in Japan back in August 2019, with a limited US release in November 2019.
This movie’s story takes place after season 2, and it starts with Kazuma Satou receiving a letter from Yunyun, asking him to have a son with her to help save her village.
The letter turns out to be fake, but Megumin decides to check on the village to see what has happened.
When they get there, the party discovers that the village is being attacked by Sylvia, one of the Demon King’s Generals.
By the end, Kazuma and his party were able to defeat Sylvia thanks to Yunyun and the power of the Crimson Magic Clan members.

Is the KonoSuba: Legend of Crimson Movie Canon?
Seasons 1 and 2 of the KonoSuba TV anime are based on volumes 1-2 and 3-4, respectively. As for the Legend of Crimson movie, it is based on the light novel series’ fifth volume.
As it’s based on the light novel, the movie is a canon entry in the KonoSuba anime series. That’s because it’s effectively a sequel to the second season.
This is different from most anime films. After all, films in the popular One Piece and My Hero Academia franchises feature non-canon stories.

Should You Watch Legend of Crimson before KonoSuba Season 3?
Given that it’s a canon entry in the series, KonoSuba fans should definitely watch Legend of Crimson before season 3.
While viewers should still be able to understand the events of season 3 without watching the movie, there may be references to the movie’s story in the new season.
