Exploring Why Zack Snyder Chose Ezra Miller as Barry Allen
Ezra Miller, who played two versions of Barry Allen in 2023’s The Flash, identifies as nonbinary while openly using they/them pronouns.
They first came out as Queer back in 2012 during a press tour for the adaptation of Perks of Being a Wallflower.
As it so happens, it was the same film that convinced Zack Snyder to cast Miller as the Scarlet Speedster back in 2017’s Justice League.
Apparently, Snyder had been sold on Miller playing Barry Allen since the “day I saw him in Perks of Being a Wallflower.”
At the time, Miller was portraying a closeted gay character in Perks of Being a Wallflower. So it is possible that Snyder also wanted that for his Barry.
Not to mention, Barry Allen is canonically gay in a particular Earth sector in the comics, which we will dig deeper into in the next section.

Is The Flash Canonically Gay?
There are other versions of Barry Allen in DC comics that confirmed he is indeed gay.
For example, there's Red Racer, who is the LGBTQ+ Flash from Earth-36 who fell in love with Flashlight, the supposed Green Lantern in his reality.
As for other versions like the Arrowverse, Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen is not gay in The Flash series, although plenty of characters on the show had diverse members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Keep in mind that Barry Allen was gay in an alternate timeline in the movie, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. But then again, that timeline was considered to be null and void.

Who is Barry Allen’s Love Interest in The Flash?
Barry Allen’s love interest was still Iris West in 2023's The Flash. Barry met her back in college and soon, as a reporter on the job to write about the progression of his father's alleged murder case.
When Barry travels back in time and changes his mother's fate, Iris West almost happens to be his 18-year-old version's girlfriend when he asks her out on a date.
Unfortunately, the 2023 DC movie did not mention or confirm any potential gay identity for him, as the only dating history he had was Iris West in both the present and an alternate version of Barry.
