The world of DC has been up for revamping since new co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran stepped up to the plate. Upon unleashing the completely new DC slate titled Chapter One: Gods & Monsters, many fans began to wonder, is this the end for the Snyderverse?
That said, The Flash has always been pinned to be the starting point for Gunn’s evolving DCEU nowadays. But even so, is it still a part of the Snyderverse?
Is The Flash Movie Part of the Snyderverse?
Considering that The Flash movie has long been in production, even before James Gunn’s announcement of the new DC slate happening, it still leaves the question whether the DCEU film is part of the new slate or Snyderverse.
Ezra Miller’s The Flash solo movie was first announced in 2014, the same year the star joined the DC Extended Universe.
However, Zack Snyder was already being pushed away by Warner Bros. at the time, rendering the solo movie’s delays to prolong from 2022 until it settled releasing this 2023.
Well, here’s some stuff that still connects The Flash to the Snyderverse.
Apart from the DCEU film still using General Zod and Ben Affleck’s Batman, it doesn’t change the fact that Ezra Miller debuted under the Snyderverse in 2021’s Justice League.
But given that The Flash will be rebooting the entire franchise, recent reports have been pointing out that the Snyderverse is being wiped off the DC map as we speak.
In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, The Flash director Andy Muschietti explained how the upcoming DCEU film will honor Zack Snyder’s work even though he is no longer a part of the franchise:
“I would love Zack [Snyder] to watch this movie. I think we honored the part of the movie that he created in terms of characters and characterizations. And cast. So I think he would enjoy it.”
So, seeing that the pivotal Scarlet Speedster will no longer be canonically rooted in the Snyderverse, where does the Flash go from here?
The DCEU Timeline Explained: When Does The Flash Happen?
The Flash is not exactly a part of the new DC Chapter One slate, since Gunn and Safran’s Gods & Monsters begins with Superman: Legacy (currently slated to release on July 11, 2025), but it will become the setting stone for the future of the DCEU slate!
While Zack Snyder’s Justice League could have left potential sequels for the franchise, Gunn and Safran are steering the wheel towards a different future than what Snyderverse set up for the DCEU, especially since Superman and Batman are going to be recast at some point in the future.
Earlier this year, Gunn and Safran explained in a press conference regarding how the four DCU movies (Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash) fit into the DCEU timeline (via Collider):
“So, how can we take these things together and make them make sense and have them unified and have it one real universe?... I think that we’ve gotten lucky with the next four movies, frankly, because we have Shazam, which leads into [The Flash], which resets everything which then goes into Blue Beetle, which is totally disconnected… But the one thing that we can promise is that everything from… our first project forward, will be canon, and will be connected. We’re using some actors from the past, we’re not using actors from the past. But everything from that moment forward will be connected and consistent.”
