Bringing the notorious serial killer John Kramer aka Jigsaw killer back to the big screen means one thing — we’ll once again see one of the ingeniously horrifying traps he has set up for the franchise.

The newest installment for the Saw franchise takes place between the first Saw film and Saw II and seeing as the official trailer seemingly teases that this will be the last, is Saw X really the final movie in the franchise?

Saw X will unveil yet another tragic backstory from John Kramer’s past, back when he had to find a miraculous cure for his frontal lobe tumor.

Instead of coming across talented surgeons to help him with running tests, he figured out he was being conned by fraud artists. This, of course, leads him to turn the tables on them, as the serial killer is known to do in the franchise.

The question lies in whether this is going to be the last time we’ll be seeing Jigsaw appear on the big screens, especially with Amanda Young returning alongside him.

Saw X director Kevin Greutert recently told SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar) about the potentiality of making more movies for the franchise. To that, he said:

“There’s no obvious new direction to go after this film. But I think there probably will be more Saw movies, particularly if this one is successful.”

That said, Saw XI would highly depend on how it performs on the box office charts, which would have to compete with The Nun 2’s ongoing success at the box office.

As of current, Saw X has just been released in theaters, so it's going to have to wait at least a weekend or two to determine whether a Saw XI could happen or not.

Now that that’s out of the way, would you need to watch the old Saw movies before seeing Saw X in theaters?

The Saw franchise has a rich story revolving around the infamous traps Jigsaw arranges for his victims, and since Saw X comes from a long history of slasher films, is it necessary to watch the old Saw movies first?

The director added in the same interview how Saw X is mostly a ‘standalone film’ overall.

Then again, he raised one crucial point that non-watchers would miss if they ended up going into Saw X blindly:

“It’s not about knowing or remembering anything about the previous films. It’s a richer experience if you know about Saw because otherwise, you won’t necessarily know who Amanda is when she appears, but it’s very clear from the beginning what’s happening.”

In an interview with Empire, director Greutert describes Saw X as an ‘emotional journey that you go on with John Kramer’ and ‘less of a slaughterhouse experience from the point of view of the victims', which could help you decide if you'd want to check out the Saw movies' timeline first.
