Overtake!: An Original Formula 4 Racing Anime
Studio TROYCA’s original anime, Overtake!, is enthralling the anime world due to its well-written story, likable characters, significant themes, and decent animation that somehow reminds us of Heavenly Delusion.
Overtake! centers around Haruka Asahina, a teenager who has big dreams.
Ever since Haruka was young, he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. Haruka’s father was a Formula 4 racer who won the podium before he died in a racing accident.
Since then, Haruka has chosen to compete in the same league as his father, albeit without the backing of actual large corporations.
Thanks to Komaki Futoshi of Komaki Motors, Haruka gets a chance to achieve his dream.
However, Komaki Motors is only a privateer compared to the big guns in the race.
The company’s budget is minuscule in contrast to the actual budget needed to support Haruka’s expensive sport.
Regardless, Haruka is a talented driver capable of propelling Komaki Motors to the top of the standings.
His all-white Formula-4-racecar may be dated, but his desire to finish on the podium is stronger than anybody else in the race.
At some point, Haruka encounters a local photographer named Koya Madoka, whose heart is touched when he sees Haruka’s crying face.
Will Koya’s genuine desire to help Haruka get the financial support the boy needs to win the race?
Is Overtake! a BL Anime?
No, Overtake! is not a BL anime, although some suggestive scenes will satisfy fans of the genre.
Haruka Asahina and Koya Madoka have an evident chemistry. Fans of the genre will immediately recognize the romantic tension between Koya and Haruka from the moment they first meet.
Fans of the genre will undoubtedly fall in love with these two characters and hope for the best, especially after Koya photographed a tearful Haruka.
Haruka Asahina is a soft-boy figure with a cold and emphatic exterior, whereas Koya Madoka is Haruka's golden retriever.
He compliments Haruka at every opportunity, claiming that watching him race motivates him to do his best, and so on.
Meanwhile, the dynamic between the lead and the second driver of team Belsorriso is spot-on as well. They support each other during the race, and they have complete trust in their skills and abilities.
The conflict between Haruka and Belsorriso’s Tokumaru Toshiki is also an interesting storyline in the series. They have a history together, which most of the time pushes the two characters to banter with one another.
So, What Is Overtake!’s Genre?
Overtake! is not a BL anime but rather a drama-and-sports anime with a Motorsports racing theme.
It is a drama anime in that it explores the trauma of Koya Madoka as a photographer, Haruka Asahina’s troubled and painful backstory, Tokumaru Toshiki’s conflict within himself, and more.
Overtake! is a sports anime with the theme of Motorsports Racing as it follows Haruka’s journey in the Formula 4 category.
