Iron Man Becomes the First Marvel Movie to Join the National Film Registry

The Library of Congress announced today the 25 films that are inducted this year into the National Film Registry. All of them were chosen for "their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to preserve the nation’s film heritage." The selections vary from films dating back as early as 1898 to as recent as 2011.

One of the films that were selected for this year is 2008's Iron Man, which kick-started the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) franchise. It is the third comic book movie to join the registry following Superman and The Dark Knight and it is also the first ever Marvel movie to do so.

"Iron Man was the very first film Marvel Studios independently produced," producer Kevin Feige said in response to the news. "It was the first film that we had all of the creative control and oversight on and it was really make or break for the studio."

He continued, "All of our favorite movies are the ones that we watch over and over again and that we grow up with. The notion that here we are, almost 15 years after the release of Iron Man, and to have it join the Film Registry tells us it has stood the test of time and that it is still meaningful to audiences around the world."

Other films that were inducted into the registry this year are Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), Charade, Carrie (1976), Hairspray (1988), The Little Mermaid, When Harry Met Sally, House Party, Pariah, and many more.

This is certainly a wonderful honor for the film and there is no doubt that it deserves the spot considering the legacy and impact that it had ever since its release in 2008. Without Iron Man, there is no MCU, which is now the biggest movie franchise of all time. It would be interesting to see if we will see more MCU or comic book movies, in general, get inducted in the coming years.
