Hulu Orders a Pilot for Marvel's Runaways

Hulu is ordering a pilot based on the Marvel series Runaways, Deadline reports. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who are best known for creating Gossip Girl, are on writing. Marvel Television and ABC Signature are also behind the series.

Runaways first debuted in 2003 as a comic written by Brian K Vaughan and drawn by Adrian Alphona. It followed six Los Angeles teenagers who don't have much in common besides their parents being friends. But when they discover their parents are actually part of a supervillain organization, they decide to put aside their differences and- you guessed it- run away together. While on the run, they're aided by innate superpowers, incredible technology and a pet telepathic dinosaur.

Runaways was designed to appeal to a teenage audience (it was even collected in little manga-like books initially) and it looks like recruiting Schwartz and Savage is keeping with aiming for that demographic. After all, Gossip Girl was a story focusing on teens coming-of-age, much like Runaways. "We've known the Runaways‘ story would make great television," said Jeph Loeb, who is Head of Marvel Television, "and being lucky enough to have Josh and Stephanie — who have time and again created shows that speak so genuinely to this exact audience — write and produce the series is nothing short of remarkable."

Savage and Schwartz are excited to get to work themselves. ""I'm a long-time fan of Runaways and couldn't be more excited to bring Brian and Adrian's characters to life," Schwartz says. Savage follows up with "Josh and I can't wait to get to work for Marvel and Hulu."

Runaways was actually the first Marvel comic I got into, so I'm excited to see it get a series. It was a fresh and fun title that sucessfully appealed to my teenage self with an awesome and diverse array of characters. I hope the TV series does it justice. I also wonder if this means the comic, which has been cancelled since 2009, will be revived.
