Before we delve into the recipe, let’s discover what kakiage is all about.

Kakiage is a variant of a popular Japanese dish named tempura crafted from small portions of seafood, vegetables, or a blend of both.

This tasty dish often features clusters of finely cut fish or shellfish, and the seafood assortment spans scallops, shrimps, or various fish types.

Complementary to the maritime elements, vegetables like onion or Mitsuba are seamlessly integrated.

Additionally, vegetarian renditions of kakiage may incorporate ingredients like burdock, matchstick-cut carrots, and onions.

In the Delicious in Dungeon anime series, Senshi and Chilchuck joined forces to make a unique dish named Mandrake kakiage and Giant Bat tempura, leveraging Senshi’s culinary expertise and Chilchuck’s proficiency in traps.

This innovative dish involves coating shredded mandrake and marinated bat breast in batter before deep frying them in olive oil, employing a tempura-style cooking method.

However, in our real-world kitchen, we don’t have access to a Mandrake or a Giant Bat. So, we will improvise with our version of this yummy delicacy.

Here are the ingredients for Mandrake kakiage and Giant Bat tempura:

  • *Mandrake - 3 medium size
  • *Big Bat breast meat – 400 grams
  • *Basilisk egg - 1
  • Flour – 150 grams
  • Soy sauce – 1 tablespoon
  • Water – 170 cc
  • Sake – 1 tablespoon
  • Garlic and ginger – to taste
  • Salt – to taste

*Instead of these ingredients, you can use carrots, cabbage, onion, beans, or shiitake mushrooms, any kind of meat (preferably sea fish), and a regular chicken egg.

Now that we have the ingredients in place, let’s cook some Delicious in Dungeon kakiage by following these steps:

  1. Cut the vegetables into julienne or matchstick-like pieces and soak them in ice water to maintain their crunchiness. Then, coat the vegetables and toss well before mixing with the batter.
  2. Make a tempura batter by blending flour with ice-cold water until you achieve a smooth consistency resembling pancake batter.
  3. Incorporate vegetable strips into the prepared batter and delicately stir until the vegetables are thoroughly coated.
  4. Heat the olive oil (or you can use vegetable oil) and carefully place a spoonful of the vegetable batter blend into the hot oil.
  5. Fry until the pieces turn golden brown. And there you have your kakiage, as inspired by Delicious in Dungeon!
