In The Marvels, Carol Danvers' (Captain Marvel) powers become entangled with Kamala Khan's (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau's (Photon). But how did this happen? How are The Marvels' powers connected?
It turns out, the switching places at the end of Ms. Marvel was just the beginning. The Marvels trailer shows Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Monica Rambeau swapping places every time they use their powers.
In the teaser trailer, Monica and Fury head to the Khan residence looking for Kamala. Monica says that their powers have become entangled.
But while Monica explains that she can manipulate light energy, Kamala tries to show off her own powers. This leads to another swap, with Carol arriving at the Khan residence, and Kamala to where Carol was.
So, why are Carol, Kamala, and Monica suddenly swapping places in The Marvels?

Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau’s Powers in the MCU Explained
In Captain Marvel, we learn that Carol got her powers from exposure to the energy of the Tesseract (which contained one of the Infinity Stones, the Space Stone) and a blood transfusion from Yon-Rogg, which gave her Kree DNA.
Captain Marvel's powers include flight, energy absorption, super strength, photon blasts, and more.
On the other hand, in Ms. Marvel, we know that Kamala's powers come from her grandmother's bangle and her own mutant genes. Kamala's energy-based powers allow her to walk in the air, create a giant fist, shield herself, and more.
And in WandaVision, Monica got her powers after she was repeatedly exposed to the Hex. The Hex rewrote her DNA, which gave her spectral vision and other energy-based powers.
Why Are Their Powers Entangled in The Marvels?
The Marvels trailer explains how Carol, Kamala, and Monica's powers are connected: they all have light-based powers. As explained in the trailer, Carol can absorb light, Monica can see it, and Kamala can turn light into physical matter.
The Marvels become linked through their light-based powers, and this causes them to switch places whenever they use their powers.
Notably, this explains the changes in Kamala's powers in the MCU. The changes give Kamala's powers a connection or something in common with Carol and Monica's, which makes the entanglement of powers in The Marvels work.
Furthermore, it appears that the villain of the film, a Kree revolutionary named Dar-Benn, is the one responsible for the power entanglement in The Marvels.
In the Ms. Marvel post-credits scene, before Kamala and Carol switched places, Kamala's bangle started glowing. Kamala's bangle is part of a set, and in The Marvels trailer, we see that the other bangle is with Dar-Benn.
Additionally, the film's synopsis does say:
"When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau."
So, it's clear that Dar-Benn has something to do with the entanglement. As to the specifics of all this, we’ll know for sure when the film comes out this November 10, 2023.
