While Avatar: The Way of Water is obviously a sequel to Avatar, taking place 10 years later, that doesn't mean that James Cameron wishes for audiences to necessarily think of it as such.

Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024, Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, respectively. So every two years after Avatar: The Way of Water is released, we'll get a new Avatar sequel.

To many fans, this might seem like over-kill, but on the other hand, fans have been waiting 13 years for Avatar: The Way of Water. And besides, having each subsequent film spread apart by two years is hardly excessive.

By comparison, the plan for the next four Avatar movies actually seems quite modest. With that said, the fact that three additional sequels are already in production, one of which is "95%" complete, does seem a little presumptuous.
