Avatar 2: The Way of Water (2022) will see the return of a number of actors from the 2009 sci-fi epic. However, one of their characters was actually killed off in that film. So how does Sigourney Weaver return for Avatar 2?
Check out the epic new trailer for Avatar 2: The Way of Water below:
Avatar: The Way of Water is the first of four sequels to James Cameron's revolutionary sci-fi epic, which took the box office by storm in 2009/2010 and wowed audiences with its immersive 3D and motion capture performances.
Fans have been waiting patiently for the first sequel, and now, the epic first-look trailer shows the return of two very familiar characters - Jake Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, respectively.
Other returning cast members are CCH Pounder (Mo’at), Giovanni Ribisi (Parker Selfridge), Joel David Moore (Dr. Norm Spellman), Dileep Rao (Dr. Max Patel), and Matt Gerald (Corporal Lyle Wainfleet).
Even Stephen Lang will be reprising his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar, however, this time he will be playing a Na'vi version of the character, and is said to be the main antagonist again, just like in the first movie.
But there's actually another character who dies in the first movie who will be returning for Avatar: The Way of Water. Sigourney Weaver, who plays Dr. Grace Augustine in Avatar (2009), is back for the 2022 sequel.
In the first film, Weaver plays Dr. Grace Augustine, who dies at the end of the movie after being fatally wounded by gunshot. So how does Sigourney Weaver return for Avatar 2? Is she the same character who has somehow survived?
No - this time, Weaver will be playing the adopted Na'vi daughter of Jake and Neytiri. In fact, you can actually see her character swimming near some reef in the new trailer, in some truly impressive underwater motion capture.
Her character's name is Kiri, and like many other cast members, Weaver had to learn how to free-dive to film many underwater scenes, so we can expect to see Kiri spend a great deal of time underwater.
How much Kiri will feature in Avatar: The Way of Water, though, remains to be seen. The film boasts an enormous cast, from several returning cast members to new characters, which is evident from the trailer alone.
Newcomers to the Na’vi are Cliff Curtis (Tonowari), Jamie Flatters (Neteyam), Jeremy Irwin (Young Neteyam), Britain Dalton (Lo’ak), Chloe Coleman (Young Lo’ak), Trinity Bliss (Tuktirey), Bailey Bass (Tsireya), Filip Geljo (Aonung), Duane Evans Jr. (Rotxo), and Kate Winslet (Ronal).
Newcomers to the human cast are Jack Champion (Javier “Spider” Socorro), Edie Falco (General Ardmore), Michelle Yeoh (Dr. Karina Mogue), Brendan Cowell (Captain Mick Scoresby), Jemaine Clement (Dr. Ian Garvin), Oona Chaplin (Varang), and Vin Diesel and CJ Jones in undisclosed roles.
