Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series features some big changes from the original. One of the biggest ones that fans noticed is that Kyoshi controls Aang in the Avatar Netflix show.

This is a surprise given that Kyoshi did not appear during the Kyoshi Island episode of the cartoon. Because of this, fans have been buzzing about this scene.

As with most live-action adaptations of animated series, Netflix’s Avatar show features major changes from the original. For instance, Aang sees Kyoshi first in the spirit world instead of Roku.

While communicating with Kyoshi, Aang becomes unresponsive in the real world. Thus, he is oblivious to the fact that Fire Nation forces led by Commander Zhao began to attack Kyoshi Island.

The Kyoshi warriors try their best to defend the island, but the Fire Nation forces have started to get the upper hand. In response, Kyoshi shows Aang the power of the Avatar by taking control of Aang’s body.

Thus, Aang transforms into Kyoshi and decimates the Fire Nation soldiers, successfully defending the island. After this, Aang returns to his old self.

This was not what happened in the original animated series, leading many to wonder how exactly Avatar Kyoshi was able to control Aang.

Even though it did not happen in the cartoon, the events of the original series offer a good explanation of how it happened.

In the Nickelodeon cartoon, the first Avatar incarnation that Aang meets is Roku. The two finally meet when Aang visits a temple in Fire Nation territory during episode 8.

There, Roku explains that Sozin’s Comet will return, which will give Lord Ozai the power he needs to take over the world.

Soon after, Roku manifests through Aang, leading Aang to transform into a powerful firebender. Thanks to this, Roku repels Zhao’s forces, destroying the temple in the process.

Based on this event in the original, it’s clear that previous Avatars have the power to take over the body of the current incarnation at their temple or shrine, at least for a short time.

The events may have changed, but Kyoshi gaining control of Aang in the Netflix Avatar series makes sense given that this is a canonical feat in the original.

You can watch this event unfold in episode 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix. There, you can also see the rest of the show’s first season.
