Many fans had looked forward to seeing a Game of Thrones spin-off featuring Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, but recent developments indicate that that project is no longer on the production table.

HBO stirred the fanbase when it announced in 2022 that it was developing a potential spin-off to the Game of Thrones series that would expand on the story of Jon Snow. Just today, however, Kit Harington revealed that the project had been cancelled.

Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, the Eternals actor said that the production team has decided not to push through with the spin-off because there was no source material to work with. They just couldn’t find “the right story to tell,” he said.

The later seasons of Game of Thrones were negatively received by the fan base because of the creative decisions the team had to take after running out of source material. One of these decisions dealt with Snow’s fate at the end of the equally divisive series finale in 2019, a story that the spin-off would have to deal with.

By comparison, the prequel spin-off, House of the Dragon, is doing well, critically and creatively. This series, which focuses on the fall of the House Targaryen before the events of the main Game of Thrones story, is based on George R.R. Martin’s prequel novel Fire & Blood.

The series’ second season, which focuses on the war between the two claimants to the Targaryen throne, is due to premiere on June 16.

While the Jon Snow sequel series is already canned, HBO has given the green light for another prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, to begin production.
