With the film’s release just over a week away, Studio Ghibli fans will be happy to know that composer Joe Hisaishi has returned to compose the score for How Do You Live?, the upcoming movie by Hayao Miyazaki.
This is great news for Ghibli and Miyazaki’s fans considering that Hisaishi’s music has accompanied almost all of Miyazaki’s previous films.
Hisaishi’s new collaboration with Miyazaki was revealed recently by Tokuma Japan Communications.
The new soundtrack by Hisaishi was also confirmed to release next month.
Joe Hisaishi: A Critical Component of Any Miyazaki Film
Hayao Miyazaki is perhaps the most well-known and esteemed figure in the anime industry.
After all, his films with Studio Ghibli are beloved all over the world, including films like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and more.
While their touching stories and brilliant animation are among the most praised elements of his works, Miyazaki’s movies are also beloved for their iconic music.
The man to thank for the iconic tracks of Miyazaki’s films is none other than Joe Hisaishi, who himself is among the most renowned composers from Japan.
Hisaishi and Miyazaki’s collaboration dates back to the 80s, with Hisaishi composing the score for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Since then, all of Miyazaki’s feature films have been scored by Hisaishi.
Though there is one exception, and that is Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, which featured music by Yuji Ohno, another renowned composer.
His work with Miyazaki may be among his most popular worldwide, but Hisaishi has also worked with other renowned directors, including Takeshi Kitano and Isao Takahata.

How Do You Live? Film Soundtrack to Release This August
Tokuma Japan Communications announced that Hisaishi’s soundtrack for How Do You Live? will be released next month.
The soundtrack album is also confirmed to have 37 songs. And while there’s not much info about the individual tracks, the soundtrack is now available for pre-order in Japan.
Despite its announcement, the film’s music has not been previewed yet, and it likely won’t be given the lack of promotion for the film.
Unlike pretty much any modern movie release, Studio Ghibli decided not to release any promotional materials for the film except for the official poster.
This means the movie won’t get a trailer before its release next week.
How Do You Live? will be released in Japanese cinemas on July 14, 2023. Meanwhile, the soundtrack will be available on August 9, 2023.
