With the film’s Japan release just a few days away, Studio Ghibli confirmed that Hayao Miyazaki’s next film, How Do You Live?, is getting an IMAX release, making it the first Ghibli movie to be simultaneously released in the format.
Given this announcement, Ghibli fans in Japan can watch the highly anticipated Miyazaki movie on the biggest screens possible.
After all, IMAX cinemas are noted for having much larger screens than typical theaters.
While this is the first time for a Ghibli movie, anime films getting IMAX releases have become the norm over the past few years.
Anime Films Are Now Regularly Being Released on IMAX
IMAX is a popular film format best known for theaters with larger screens with taller aspect ratios.
Though IMAX also refers to a proprietary film format that’s used for a wide range of live-action movies, including most of Christopher Nolan’s new movies like Oppenheimer.
Not all movies shown in IMAX cinemas are filmed with IMAX cameras though, as many live-action films get digitally remastered for IMAX, with some films even having different aspect ratios for IMAX releases.
Before, remastered films are typically live-action. But in the last couple of years, many anime films have also been remastered and released in IMAX. These include Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
Though the aspect ratios of these IMAX versions don’t change, this release format has become popular for anime, likely because of the larger screens IMAX cinemas have.
It also helps distributors that IMAX releases are more expensive than regular screenings. This is possibly an incentive to release anime movies in the said format.

Hayao Miyazaki’s How Do You Live? Is Heading to IMAX Cinemas in Japan
The latest anime film to get the IMAX treatment is How Do You Live?, the next and likely last movie from Hayao Miyazaki.
Studio Ghibli confirmed the film’s IMAX release a few days ago, making this the first film from the studio to get a simultaneous IMAX release.
Aside from IMAX, the film will also be released on other cinema platforms, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
How Do You Live? will be released in Japanese cinemas on July 14, 2023. For now, there’s no word yet on a release date for the film outside Japan.
However, it’s expected that the movie will also be screened in IMAX in the US and other countries around the world when it eventually gets released.
