There's a lot of excitement right now for the third season of the HBO Max animated series Harley Quinn after the successful run of the first two seasons. While some of the plot details of the upcoming season are still under wraps, we do expect that it will focus a lot on Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy's relationship. Now, it looks like someone who is heavily connected to the DCEU will be making an appearance in the season.
During an interview with Slash Film, Harley Quinn co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker revealed that The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker director James Gunn will be making a guest appearance as himself in the upcoming third season. "He is playing himself, and is directing a movie about [Batman's father] Thomas Wayne," he said.
Gunn is obviously heavily connected to the character of Harley Quinn since she is one of the main characters in The Suicide Squad. While he is heavily known as a filmmaker, Gunn has also done small acting roles before such as the Maskless Sakaaran in Guardians of the Galaxy. Right now, he is involved in the DC world as he just recently worked on the first season of Peacemaker and is set to do more DC projects in the future.
It is exciting to hear that Gunn will be appearing in the upcoming third season as it would be some sort of full-circle moment given that he is the director of The Suicide Squad. It could be a fun meta moment in the series as well. It's also not the first time that the series has a guest star who voiced as themselves with examples such as George Lopez, Howie Mandel, and Frankie Muniz in the first two seasons.
It would be curious to see how Gunn will play in the story of the season besides being a director of a Thomas Wayne movie. Hopefully, we'll get to see him interact with the main characters, especially since some of them are also characters in his film. This should add to the excitement of the upcoming season which is looking to be as crazy as the first two seasons.
