Groot has become one of the most beloved characters in the MCU due to various reasons such as his cuteness (at least in his baby form) and the fact that all we heard him say throughout his appearances are the words "I am Groot" which is his only language.
However, at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, we heard Groot say a different line for the very first time as he said "I love you, guys" to the other members of the team before they split up.
After the film's release, James Gunn explained that the moment was meant to indicate that the audience finally understands the character's dialogue for the first time.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight during the world premiere of Fast X (via The Direct), Vin Diesel, who voices Groot, was asked about his thoughts regarding Groot's surprising last line in the MCU film.
The actor expressed his enthusiasm when he recorded the line as he called it "a testament to the ten years of loyalty" and a payoff to the fans' patience after following the character for a long time.
"You know, just... on that front, it was very cool because it meant that the audience is now able to understand the vernacular, the language of this Flora colossus, and that’s a testament to the ten years of loyalty which we’ve been so blessed with, right?," he said.
"In this franchise with the Groot character and patience to have people wait that long for... ten years of someone just saying three monosyllabic words. But, like everything alive, with patience and dedication."
It sounds like Diesel was really happy that the audience was finally able to hear a different line from the character after all these years and we can understand what his "I am Groot" meant during the special emotional moment.
There is also no doubt that the Fast X star loves playing the character as we can really feel his sense of enthusiasm in the role and even wore a Groot-themed suit during the MCU film's red carpet premiere recently.
So far, there is no confirmation yet whether Diesel will reprise the voice role of Groot in another MCU project aside from the upcoming episodes of the Disney+ animated short series I Am Groot.
