Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Star Nathan Fillion Looks Back at Working on Buffy the Vampire Slayer

He might be known as Captain Mal on Firefly or Richard Castle from Castle but Nathan Fillion has played a lot of important characters in his career. The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star is opening up about the first time he played a bad guy on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Back in 2003, Nathan Fillion was introduced as Caleb in the seventh and final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

A former priest, Caleb is a serial killer who becomes the right-hand man of the First Evil. He is responsible for the death of two potential Slayers and is widely seen as one of the worst villains in the show's history.

Nathan Fillion did such a great job at playing Caleb that it was inconceivable to imagine that the character was his first villainous role. Interestingly, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 actor admitted he would love to play another villain again in the future.

"Yeah, absolutely," Fillion said.

"That was my first time playing a villain," he said of his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. "Joss Whedon taught me a lot about playing villains."

"The first thing being, the villain doesn't think he's the villain. That was very informative to me. He's not in the corner of wrenching his hands going, 'I'm the bad guy and I'm going to do something nasty,'" Fillion added.

He continued, "He's justified and he is righteous, which I think makes... I'm really scared of righteous people because once they're righteous, they can't be wrong anymore."

"Whatever they want, they feel righteous. You can't stop them. It's the worst. So yeah, that scares me too," Fillion concluded.

Nathan Fillion had previously appeared as an alien prisoner in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he is playing the new character Master Carja in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will finally hit theaters on May 5, 2023.
