Groot & Rocket Spinoff Movie Scrapped by Marvel Studios, Director Reveals

MCU director James Gunn has just revealed that before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 came about, there was supposed to be a spinoff movie dedicated to Rocket and Groot.

As MCU fans drag the day the Guardians trilogy ends this coming May, Gunn detailed that the duo almost had a short film planned (apart from the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special).

Unfortunately, this was told off by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, scrapped and never to be seen before development.

“I always thought it was a third movie thing, because I thought we had to tell Peter Quill’s story first and then get into Rocket’s story.” Gunn revealed in an interview with io9.

Gunn admitted that the scrapped Rocket and Groot movie could just as easily have become a spinoff one, instead.

“I think the only question was, was it going to be a Rocket and Groot movie or was it going to be Guardians 3,” Gunn added, “Because initially, I was going to do it as Rocket and Groot.”

It remains to be seen if the duo’s potential spinoff could really happen in the future.

However, given how MCU fans are distraught at seeing the guardians go their separate ways in this threequel, a spinoff movie would do wonders to keep the love alive for Gunn’s franchise.

It is worth mentioning that while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last time we’ll see Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, and Pom Klementieff, Gunn is more than happy to welcome the stars into the DCU with his new slate.

As for what roles these Guardians stars could procure, well, it would highly depend on what Gunn has in store for them, which is still being kept under wraps for now.

Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premieres on May 5.
