It’s official! Lars Mikkelsen has been confirmed to play Grand Admiral Thrawn in the upcoming Ahsoka series, making the actor the latest star to reprise their voice acting role in live-action.
Mikkelsen first voiced the villain in Star Wars Rebels, and while Star Wars fans have long been waiting for the actor’s introduction to play the live-action version, not all fans found him rousing enough.
Despite being considered the best to play his own role in the new series, fans have been poking fun at Mikkelsen’s appearance.
While this may not necessarily impact on the changing castings for Ahsoka, we have yet to see him in action, which is exactly what Star Wars author and Grand Admiral Thrawn creator Timothy Zahn highlights in a recent interview.
“I visualize the characters in terms of attitude, not so much in time as voice or appearance.” Zahn said in an interview at Paris Fan Festival 2023 (via CloneWeb).
“Lars Mikkelsen did a wonderful job with the voice.” Zahn added, “The actor is Danish. He doesn’t really have an accent, but he has a particular vocal cadence when he plays Thrawn which gives him a little alien side. He’s the perfect cast.”

Fans poking fun at Mikkelsen for looking like a “blue-skinned Elon Musk” in the live-action is quite a premature reaction, seeing as he is not the only Rebels actor who reprised his voice role.
Apart from Mikkelsen, Katee Sackhoff also reprised her role from being the voice actor for Bo-Katan Kryze.
Sackhoff did not look exactly like the character, but she pulled off The Mandalorian role, exceeding our expectations.
For now, it looks like we’ll have to wait for Mikkelsen to make his official debut on Ahsoka. In the meantime, you can check out Mikkelsen’s Thrawn in the teaser trailer below:
