Legendary manga artist Go Nagai has a museum in his hometown of Wajima, though it has sadly been damaged. In response to the earthquake damage to the museum, Go Nagai and his studio shared statements addressing what happened.

Nagai’s statement thanked supporters and offered encouragement to those who were affected by the tragedy. Meanwhile, his studio gave updates on the damage that the museum sustained.

As of today, efforts are still being made to address the tragedy that struck Ishikawa Prefecture on the first of January.

Powerful Earthquake Strikes Sea of Japan Coast on New Year’s Day

On New Year’s Day, Japan was struck by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake. With an epicenter off the coast of Suzu City in the Noto peninsula, the earthquake caused widespread damage in Ishikawa Prefecture cities.

The earthquake was strong enough to have caused noticeable shaking as far as Tokyo. Following the quake, major tsunami warnings were also posted – the first since the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

Due to the earthquake's intensity, cities such as Wajima, Nanao, and Suzu have suffered significant damage, with many buildings being destroyed by the shaking and subsequent fires.

Most anime studios are located in or near the Tokyo metropolitan area, though the anime studio P.A. Works (of Skip and Loafer fame) is based in Toyama Prefecture, which is fairly close to Ishikawa.

Soon after the earthquake, the studio shared an update, saying that while the office suffered some damage, it was fairly minimal.

Sadly, that was not the case with the Go Nagai museum in Wajima, which suffered extensive damage.

The Go Nagai museum was opened in Wajima back in 2009 as the city is Devilman creator Nagai’s hometown. Following the earthquake, images of the museum being burned down were circulated in publications.

Now, Nagai shared a statement, saying that he is saddened by the damage in Wajima. He also said that more than the museum’s damage, he would like to focus his efforts on helping the people of Wajima.

Despite the museum’s collection likely being damaged, Nagai said that he can always draw the pieces that were lost.

Meanwhile, Dynamic Production’s statement confirmed that the museum was burned down, though the full extent of the damage has yet to be ascertained.

The company also said that their priority for now is helping the people of Wajima, with more updates to be revealed when they receive more details.
