Gina Prince-Bythewood on Updating Cloak and Dagger to the 21st Century

Marvel continues to strike gold with their various live-action series' with Cloak and Dagger being the latest example. Viewable exclusively on Freeform, the show has managed to gain plenty of positive reviews upon its release and it's only about to reach episode six. As to why the show has been so popular, many feel its due to the gritty tone and how the setting makes it feel more realistic compared to other Marvel properties.

Pilot episode director Gina Prince-Bythewood feels that the series thrives on the semi-realism and has discussed how updating these characters to the 21st century has made given the show its unique identity.

Speaking with Marvel.com, Prince-Bythewood felt that bringing up real-life issues to the series was really important, along with the constant unsure feeling of being a teenager. Anyone who has seen the first few episodes knows that it deals with relevant topics like drug use and racism, making it feel much more timely.

"That was one of the things that Joe [Pokaski] and I were very happy about how he flipped from the comics. We stayed true to the characters, but the things that Tyrone and Tandy were going through, because of race, because of this day and age, 2018, there were things that needed to be updated. We absolutely did that. That was important. We deal with race head on…I think the more we can do that, the more normal it'll become."

Drug use and racism was a bit of a theme in the duo's debut since they were forced to use experimental drugs, which gave them their powers. Once the duo became a team, they decided to protect those who may become victims on the streets like they once were. Their exploits has lead to team-ups with Spider-Man and the X-Men, among other characters.

Cloak and Dagger can be streamed now on Freeform.
