Years ago, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing a Star Wars project that was reportedly planned to be a trilogy of films. The duo joined the franchise at the height of the HBO show's popularity.

However, the project was shelved as the duo went on to sign an overall deal with Netflix and end their involvement in the franchise.

During that time, there were no details regarding the story that the duo was planning for the trilogy and it was also unknown why they decided to shelve the project.

Now, years later, the duo has finally spilled the details of their canceled Star Wars trilogy.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff and Weiss opened up about their canceled Star Wars project and revealed that it was supposed to be about the origins of the Jedi Order.

"We wanted to do The First Jedi. Basically how the Jedi Order came to be, why it came to be, the first lightsaber," Benioff said.

Weiss joked that Rian Johnson ruined their idea when he decided to name his Star Wars movie "The Last Jedi."

He added, "And we were annoyed as hell when [Rian] called his movie The Last Jedi. He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on."

When asked why the project didn't pan out, the duo shared that Lucasfilm simply wasn't on board with the idea.

"[Lucasfilm] ended up not wanting to do a First Jedi story. We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately they decided they didn’t want to do that," Benioff said.

"And we totally get it. It’s their company and their IP, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for."

Interestingly, James Mangold's Star Wars movie, which is currently in development, is set to explore the "Dawn of the Jedi," similar to the concept that Benioff and Weiss were toying on their canceled project.

Some fans may feel that it was a missed opportunity for Lucasfilm, but the cancellation wasn't a surprise since the studio also abandoned multiple movie projects in the past few years.

Hopefully, Mangold's movie will end up happening since the origins of the Jedi Order is an interesting idea to explore and it would feel unique from the rest of the projects in the franchise.
