After House of the Dragon, another Game of Thrones spinoff is progressing. Owen Harris of Black Mirror fame has been announced as the lead director of the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Some of Harris’s directorial credits include acclaimed episodes of the anthology series Be Right Back, San Junipero, and Striking Vipers. He also helmed the first episode of Jordan Peele’s revival of The Twilight Zone and made his big screen debut in Kill Your Friends (2015) starring Nicholas Hoult.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, about the improbable partnership of Ser Duncan the Tall or Dunk, described as a young, naive, yet courageous knight, and his squire Egg. The story will be set a century before the events of Game of Thrones when the Iron Throne is still under the control of the Targaryens.

Previously, Peter Claffey (Vikings: Valhalla) and Dexter Sol Ansell (young Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games prequel) have been cast as Dunk and Egg, respectively.

Unlike earlier Westeros tales, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will have a shorter and more intimate storytelling format. Only six episodes for its first season will highlight the relationship between the two leads. In comparison, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon had ten episodes featuring ensemble casts and epic storylines per episode.

After its series finale aired in May 2019, Game of Thrones has spurred multiple spinoff ideas for HBO’s consideration, thanks to its loyal fanbase and rich fantasy drama developed by Martin.

The first official release post-GoT, House of the Dragon, premiered in August 2022, chronicling the unrest in the House of Targaryen 200 years before Daenerys came into the picture. A second season is set to premiere this June.

All eight seasons of Game of Thrones and the first season of House of the Dragon are available to stream on Max.
