There is no doubt that Game of Thrones is one of the most ruthless series to exist out there. Apart from the gut-wrenching political storylines, the show is most prominently known for exhibiting the most graphic deaths on TV. Here are the x most brutal Game of Thrones deaths ranked.

  1. Ned Stark's Decapitation

One of the first major character deaths in Game of Thrones was when the Starks were led to believe they would leave King's Landing unscathed.

Unfortunately, what Sansa failed to foresee is that Joffrey Baratheon is more ruthless than he appears to be. Ned's loyalty to the late King Baratheon sent him to his doom in a surprise public execution.

  2. Out the Moon Door, You Go

The Moon Door is meant for any public execution that the Arryns often used on traitors and criminals in the Vale.

It just so happens that Lysa Arryn had not thought she, too, would ever find herself falling off her own castle, when Littlefinger aka Petyr Baelish decided to push her in to defend Sansa.

  3. Viserys Targaryen is not the King of Dragons

Everything Viserys Targaryen had been doing to his own sister, Daenerys, has led to his eventual tragic fate of dying by his own greed.

In an attempt to hail the crown to rule over the Khals himself, he instead found himself bending his knees right in front of Khal Drogo before he 'crowns' him with boiling gold over his head.

Not to mention, this also confirmed that it was Dany all along who had been the Mother of Dragons.

  4. Tommen Baratheon's Suicide

A disheartening sight always involves losing your own kids to their own end. As one of the youngest in the Lannisters, he was always humble and wanted nothing but to find love and build his own family.

But that was set ablaze (literally) when his own mother, Cersei, decided to stab him in the back by murdering his wife, Margaery Tyrell, and her brother, in the Sept.

  5. Cersei's Revenge

One thing you've got to know about the Lannisters is that they always pay their debts. In this case, Cersei had her revenge against Septa Unella by humiliating her in her own castle, while leaving her to The Mountain's bidding.

All the while mocking Septa the very words she had chanted to Cersei on her public walk of shame, "Shame, shame, shame."

  6. Hodor's Tragic Fate

Hodor's name has always been one of the biggest mysteries in Game of Thrones. And it was only through Bran Stark's raven eye that we got to seep into Hodor's past, where he was always meant to protect Bran.

The very sentence "Hold the door" kept echoing to himself from his future self, which eventually got shortened into Hodor.

  7. The Night's Watch Betray Jon Snow

Jon Snow may have been resurrected the season after, but still, his death was undeniably a gore in the series.

Considering he just wanted to keep the wildlings safe within Castle Black, the men of the Night's Watch didn't take this lightly. Instead, they found it as a form of betrayal.

And so, this led to six separate stabbings on Jon.

  8. Ramsay Bolton and the Hounds

A most satisfying doom for Ramsay Bolton. After having been the last standing man (a bastard at that) in the House of Bolton, his crimes and torturing won't go unpunished.

What makes this even better is that Sansa herself orchestrated his death with his own dogs he usually used against his victims.

  9. Arya's List

Leave one wolf alive and the sheep are never safe.

Who could forget the most iconic line from the House of Stark? Arya has never truly let go of her grudge to get her revenge against the people who killed her family.

And this death scene gets even more gruesome when she slashed Walder Frey's throat herself, while watching his house crumble to the poison she poured in their wine glasses.

  10. Shireen Baratheon's Death By Fire

Stannis and Selyse Baratheon were led by the blind as they trusted the Red Woman's words more than their own.

To think that sacrificing their only child, Shireen, who was suffering from greyscale, would lead to a better foundation and economy for their household, only for it all to be in vain.

  11. Oberyn Martell's Death

You could say Oberyn Martell's a free spirit whose lack of knowledge about battle led to his gruesome death. Still, no one beats his death scene of having his eyes gauged out with his skull crushed by The Mountain, right in front of his household to watch.

  12. The Red Wedding

Most Game of Thrones fans would argue that The Rains of Castemere is the best episode in the entire series. Nothing can ever top the Red Wedding's full-on blast about killing off the Starks matriarch and her eldest son during their feast.

This also led to Arya plotting her revenge then and there. Had this not happened, the House of Stark would have been reunited after the death of their father at King's Landing.
