The day is finally here. As confirmed by Crunchyroll back in February, Funimation officially closed on April 2.

Following its official shutdown, fans on X (formerly Twitter) shared their tributes to Funimation. After all, the streaming service was a gateway for many anime fans to their favorite shows.

While the shutdown is sad news for many, its closure has been planned for years now.

Back in 2021, Sony acquired the streaming service Crunchyroll. As it already owned Funimation at the time, many anime fans wondered what would happen with the two services.

Then in 2022, it was confirmed that Funimation titles and subscribers will be migrated to Crunchyroll.

It took some time, but in February 2024, it was revealed that Funimation would officially shut down on April 2.

The shutdown made sense considering that Sony’s acquisition of Crunchyroll meant that Funimation was a redundant service.

In the time following the merger, while Funimation was still available to access, new seasons of anime like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan were only streamed on Crunchyroll.

While most of the anime on Funimation have now been transferred to Crunchyroll, there are still some exceptions.

Aside from shows, select language dub options for certain titles are also unavailable on Crunchyroll, likely due to licensing-related concerns.

Perhaps the biggest point of contention regarding the migration is the fact that Funimation Digital Copies were not transferred to Crunchyroll.

Digital Copies are a feature that allows owners of select anime Blu-rays access to digital versions of the anime on their discs.

As Funimation was the streaming service of choice for many anime fans in previous years, lots of tributes were shared by fans following the platform’s official closure.

Many recounted their memories of watching anime on Funimation, with some even playing the now iconic Funimation intro one last time ahead of its shutdown.

Currently, going to the Funimation website will redirect users to Crunchyroll. This is effectively the end of the service, though existing subscribers in certain regions should still be able to migrate their account details to Crunchyroll.
