With the Funimation shutdown happening soon, details about what will happen next have been shared online. One piece of information that has caused quite a stir is a reported Crunchyroll price hike in 2025.
Following the confirmation of Funimation’s shutdown date, the platform’s website confirmed that existing subscribers will see an increase in their next billing cycle when they migrate to Crunchyroll.
Soon after, it seems that some Funimation subscribers have gotten emails about the upcoming price changes.

Funimation Shutdown Leads to Crunchyroll Price Discussions
Back in early 2022, Crunchyroll announced that it would merge with Funimation. Following this, Funimation subscribers were encouraged to migrate to Crunchyroll as Funimation’s shutdown was imminent.
Despite this, Funimation did not shut down yet as it continued to get shows like the Attack on Titan finale, though new seasonal anime in 2023 like NieR Automata Ver1.1a were no longer streamed there.
Nearly two years later, Funimation is officially down this April. While existing subscribers can move to a new Crunchyroll account and retain their Watch Lists, there will be a price change.
Soon after the official announcement was shared, Gregory Guillen (@Pikagreg on X) shared that he received an email from Crunchyroll notifying an updated price.
The service update states that his annual plan’s price will increase from USD 54.95 to USD 99.99 beginning on January 28, 2025.
This has led to discussions online about how massive the price hike is based on this service update.
Take note that the price update shared in this service update only pertains to Guillen’s subscription.

Is Crunchyroll Getting a Price Hike in 2025?
Based on Funimation’s official announcement, some existing subscribers can expect a price increase when they move to Crunchyroll, though there was no mention of any specific percentage increase.
As for Guillen’s subscription cost increase, this can be explained by the status of his subscription.
Guillen clarified in a reply that this price increase is misleading, as his USD 54.95 annual plan was grandfathered to an old Funimation yearly price from 2014.
Thus, Guillen’s subscription doubling in price is likely just the case for his account, and possibly for others with grandfathered subscriptions.
Given this, it’s not clear how much the Crunchyroll price will increase for other Funimation subscribers in 2025, though a 50% increase shouldn’t be the case for everyone.
As for how many migrating subscribers will be affected, only a small subset of Funimation subscribers will get a change in the price of their plan.
Meanwhile, there will be no price changes for existing Crunchyroll subscribers who did not migrate from Funimation, at least in connection with the merger details.
