Frieren is quickly becoming one of the stand-out shows of the Fall 23 season thanks to its unique story and impressive animation. Now, fans are being treated to more as Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End just released a mini-anime spinoff.
An anime short titled Frieren's Mini Anime “Magic of ??” was released recently on the TOHO animation YouTube channel.
Specifically, the first episode of this mini-anime series was released, with more to come soon.
Along with this, it was also recently confirmed that the Frieren anime is getting more episodes than most fans thought it would get.
The Frieren Anime Is Getting More Episodes Than Expected
The trend of having extra-long premieres continues as Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End kicked off with a two-hour-long premiere on September 30.
Unlike Oshi no Ko which got a feature-length first episode, Frieren instead aired its first four episodes in one slot. Thus, the show is now technically on its fifth episode, with the sixth coming this weekend.
Most fans expected the show to just be one cour in length, but it turned out that Frieren is a two-cour series, with no breaks in between. Thus, the show will air until March 2024.
Typical two-cour shows get around 24 to 26 episodes. This is not the case with Frieren though, as it was recently confirmed that the anime will get 28 episodes in total.
This is a pleasant surprise as it means fans can look forward to a lot of fantasy goodness in the coming months.
The episode count is also unexpected given that fans expected there to be less following the extra-long premiere.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Launches Mini-Anime Spinoff
Aside from more episodes than expected, fans can also look forward to the Frieren mini-anime which is released for free on YouTube.
This mini-anime is comparable to shorts like Juju Stroll or Nier Automata’s bonus puppet endings. That’s because it’s animated in a cutesy style, with each episode just being a minute long.
The spinoff’s first episode is out now, and it follows Frieren together with her original party as she shows off some of the magic spells she collected. Check it out here:
Sadly, the official upload does not have English subtitles. Given how short it is, it’s still a must-see for fans as even non-Japanese speakers can get a rough idea of what’s happening.
New episodes of this mini-anime will be released soon, though there’s no specific release schedule for the spinoff.
