Aside from its story, Frieren’s music has garnered a lot of praise thanks to how well the tracks match the emotions of the show’s moments. So, it’s no surprise that the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End soundtrack was made differently compared to most anime shows.

This was revealed by music composer Evan Call in a recent interview with Animate Times. There, he shared the creative process behind the soundtrack’s creation.

Plus, Call mentioned how the show’s music is connected to his signature musical style.

Evan Call is perhaps one of the most popular music composers in the anime industry. After all, Call has composed the soundtracks of popular titles like Violet Evergarden and My Happy Marriage.

Given how well-received his anime works are, many fans were delighted when it was announced that Call was tapped to compose the Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End soundtrack.

The excitement was warranted as the Frieren anime’s music garnered a lot of praise thanks to how perfectly they complemented the show’s scenes. This not only extends to slow moments but also exciting battles.

In his recent interview, Call was asked about the soundtrack, specifically about the Celtic and European folk music-inspired tracks.

Call said that when he started playing music, he began with American folk and bluegrass music. This genre is heavily inspired by Celtic music.

Thus, Call said that Celtic music is the root of his signature music, meaning Frieren’s tracks can be seen as a true expression of his style.

In the interview, Call also mentioned an interesting tidbit about the anime’s music. He revealed that the anime’s score was made using the film score method.

Typically, anime series music is made by the composer with instruction from the director and staff without the footage already being made.

For the Frieren soundtrack, Call said that they scored the anime like a proper feature film. This meant Call made the music after seeing the footage.

The approach makes sense given that the series had a feature-length premiere in late September 2023.

This is done in feature films so that the music perfectly fits the footage. For Frieren, the uncommon method (at least for anime production standards) no doubt helped the music mesh well with the scenes.

Frieren went on a one-week break after the first cour, but the series will return today with a new episode.
