While its release is still a few months away, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End got a new trailer that also confirmed that Episode 1 of the anime will be a two-hour special.

Essentially, Frieren will premiere with a feature-length opening episode, beating even the runtime of Oshi no Ko Episode 1.

This should make for an even stronger hook for those who have yet to read the Frieren manga.

Aside from the runtime reveal, the new trailer also featured more of the show’s main cast, at least for its premiere.

While most TV anime begin with a standard-length opening episode, there has been a recent trend of first episodes being longer than expected.

For starters, Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc Episode 1 was an hour-long special episode. Then, there’s Oshi no Ko which had a first episode that was one hour and twenty minutes in length.

It seems that both these recent shows are about to be beaten though, as Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will have an episode that’s two hours in length.

This runtime may come as a surprise as it’s pretty much a long movie, but it makes sense given Frieren’s premise.

Without getting into spoiler territory, having a movie-length first episode should make for a much stronger hook.

Given the episode’s length, it’s also likely that the series will get a special cinema premiere in Japan, as is the case with many TV anime such as Rurouni Kenshin, Demon Slayer, and more.

Along with the runtime reveal, fans of the series were also treated to a new trailer.

While this is not the first, the latest trailer does finally feature more of Frieren’s party members.

These include Himmel, who is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (Bakugo in My Hero Academia), Heiter, who is played by Hiroki Touchi (Maine in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners), and Eisen, who is voiced by Youji Ueda (Speedwagon in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure).

The show’s three newly announced cast members join Atsumi Tanezaki, who voices Frieren.

Tanezaki is known for being the voice of Anya Forger in Spy x Family and Lady Nagant in My Hero Academia.

The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End anime will release in October 2023. For now, there’s no word yet on which platform it will be streamed on outside Japan.
