Fox's Gambit Movie Will Be a Romantic Comedy

Fox's heavily troubled Gambit movie has been in pre-production for the longest time, with many of us wondering why this project hasn't been canceled yet. Starring Channing Tatum, the movie has been in production limbo for the longest time now and has lost four directors, which is really bad. Despite all of these problems, Fox is hellbent on releasing this film and they are going to try making it part of an interesting film genre.

During an interview with IGN, X-Men producer and Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg has revealed that Gambit will be a romantic sex comedy, which actually works for the character when you stop and think about it.

Kinberg says he uses that genre term loosely, saying the movie will still be a superhero one. He brings up some great examples, stating that Logan was technically a western film but didn't have actual cowboys in them, aside from the movie X-23 was watching. The producer than brings up how Gambit is a womanizer and a hustler, which would make him a good fit for the genre.

"You know, when I say romanticcomedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It's not like they're gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It's just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are."

Comic readers who have read the excellent Rogue and Gambit mini-series know that the character can work in a romance story. If the film can be based on that comic book, it would be great, but it's not yet known if Rogue is going to make an appearance. Rogue should be dating Iceman in this continuity, but Fox doesn't bother trying to stay true to that so they should just add her.

It also helps that Channing Tatum is funny as hell. The actor has been great in 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street, along with his guest appearance in This is the End.

Gambit does not have a release date as of this writing, though reports claim that the film will enter production next year.
