Fox Is Developing A Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot With An African-American Lead

After years and years of hoping for a reboot, it looks like Buffy the Vampire Slayer is making its way back to television, this time with an African-American actress taking the show's lead role.

According to Deadline, the cable-slash-streaming division of 20th Century Fox, Fox 21 TV studios, just recently announced that it was developing a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show's alum Clare Kramer might not have believed that a reboot would sit well with fans of Joss Whedon's supernatural drama series, however Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman has previously expressed interest in rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer saying that the series is "probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back."

The new version which is to be pitched to different cable and streaming networks this summer is to be written, produced and run by Monica Owusu-Breen, the creator of Midnight, Texas. Meanwhile, Whedon is set to return as the executive producer of the series along with the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Fran Kazui, Gail Berman, Kaz Kazui, and Joe Earley.

According to the series' producers, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is to be a diverse, contemporary series that builds on the mythology established by the original show.

"Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today," the producers said in a statement to the publication.

Diversity is one of the main reasons why the producers are looking for an African American to take the lead role of the upcoming Buffy the Vampire reboot, though there is little information about the other characters in the show.

The Buffy the Vampire reboot is yet to receive a release date but we'll update everyone as soon as we get word.
