Eternals Director on Possibly Returning to Helm MCU Sequel

It's so secret that Marvel Studios is big on sequels, creating mini-franchises within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So it's no surprise that Eternals concluded with a tease towards the characters' future in the MCU. But will Chloe Zhao return to direct a potential sequel? The filmmaker has opened up about the possibility of directing another Marvel movie.

Chloe Zhao recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter where she was asked if she would be open to helming Eternals 2. Interestingly, Zhao chose to play coy.

"No comment," Zhao said simply. She then went on to state how the negative reaction to the first film affected her.

"When you're in Marvel and when you're dealing with an audience that big, I truly treasure and respect that each of us is so unique," Zhao said. "It's exciting that we're all so different, and we're all changing and growing every day. But with a global audience, it's almost impossible to make everybody perfectly happy, and to do that is to say that everyone is the same."

"So I think there's inevitably going to be that [difference of opinion], and you just have to stay true to the kind of film you want to make and who you are and the people you're collaborating with," she continued. "That's all you can do, really, and have a good time. Everything else is out of your control."

It's unfortunate that Chloe Zhao doesn't seem eager to return to the MCU at this point. However, there is still a possibility that she will change her mind and resume work on a Marvel film.

Eternals featured an ensemble cast including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. The movie premiered on November 5, 2021.
