The court battle between Epic Games and Apple continues but things are getting weird now. While Epic basically started this fight with Apple by introducing new pricing options for in-game cash in Fortnite, the company still wants to make some of that Apple money and have been failing to get things in their favor. When Apple banned Epic from using certain tools with their engine, Epic wanted a restraining order. Now, Epic wants Fortnite back on iOS devices while this court battle continues.
In the preliminary junction filed last Friday, Epic told the courts to bring Fortnite back to iOS devices or it would cause "irreparable harm." The folks at Epic also told the court that Apple needs to give back Epic's developer account, whilst also calling Apple "a monopolist" and said that the company is trying to destroy their business in a statement to Gizmodo.
"Apple is a monopolist and standing up to them is a necessary step to free consumers and developers from the unlawful restrictions Apple has imposed over app distribution and in-app payment processing on iOS. For too long, developers have not spoken out because they fear Apple's retaliation. The company's recent actions show that if you challenge Apple's monopoly, Apple will attempt to destroy your business."
Epic Games does have a point about Apple taking too much money from developers when bringing their games to iOS devices but the fact that Epic instigated this battle and even planned a campaign to get public favor was pretty gross. It also doesn't help that Epic is a billion-dollar company that hasn't always treated its employees well so there isn't a clear-cut hero or villain in this case, really.
We're expecting more from this video game soap opera soon. Fortnite is free-to-play on a number of gaming platforms right now, just not any that Apple owns.
