Enola Holmes 2's Missing Sam Claflin Case Explained By Director

Enola Holmes 2 is right around the corner, and it is set to portray a closer look on siblings Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) and Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), a teased rivalry between the two upon starting their own detective agency. However, the question remains as to why Mycroft Holmes (Sam Claflin) is not returning. You can watch the trailer here:

In the first film, Sam Claflin’s Mycroft Holmes was rather dismissive when it came to his sister’s pursuits beyond becoming a ‘fully grown woman.’ So it would be logical for the sequel to focus more on being ‘head-to-head’ with Enola’s more famous detective of a brother, Sherlock, to see how far they could both test their limits in their line of work.

When asked whether Sam Claflin’s absence was a creative decision or a schedule conflict with the actor, Enola Holmes 2 director Harry Bradbeer was quick to address that both circumstances came to a better resolution for the sequel. Check out his full story below upon speaking with Collider:

“Well, it was Sam’s schedule that became very clear, so Sam was not going to be in it… We were very sorry that Sam couldn’t be in this one. If there was a future one we would love to have him back. But that was just the practicalities of life. That then meant though that we had to then concentrate on Sherlock, which has some advantages in the sense and that it becomes a sharp pencil if you like. You’re just having to work with that particular relationship. It had to be about Sherlock and Enola and coming together. So I guess there is some blessing in having less pieces because you can do more with what you [already] have.”

Seeing as it was more of Sherlock’s encouragement in refining Enola’s evident skills, it is rather relieving to see that the sequel focuses on how their dynamic relationship would work once they are off on their own in pursuing the truth. Although the director left the invitation open for Sam Claflin, should he seek to return if Enola Holmes 3 were to happen.

Meanwhile, you can check which characters will be returning in the Enola Holmes sequel here. Enola Holmes 2 is set to premiere November 4 on Netflix
