Last year, we learned that music superstar Bad Bunny has exited Sony's Spider-Man Universe film El Muerto due to his busy schedule and, since then, there have been questions about whether the project is still happening.

Considering that the film was made as a vehicle for Bad Bunny to star in his own superhero movie, some fans believed that the project may no longer be in the works and Sony might just move forward with another Spider-Man supporting character.

Now, we have a new update on the project and it looks like it has not been shelved after all.

A recent report from Variety surrounding the current state of Sony's Spider-Man Universe franchise revealed the recent status of El Muerto.

They confirmed that the project is in development despite Bad Bunny's exit and they are looking for a new actor who will take over the role.

This update may come off as a surprise for many fans since there were assumptions that the movie is no longer happening without the involvement of the singer given that it was made into conception as his vehicle.

However, there is also a possibility that Sony will also be looking into the performance of their upcoming releases to see if a movie based on an unknown Spider-Man character is worth making without a major star like Bad Bunny headlining.

The report also noted that Sony is planning for the movie to be more standalone due to their unease with the idea of a cinematic universe of their movies and felt that a contained narrative might serve the best.

At this point, it's really hard to tell what the potential appeal of an El Muerto movie will be since it's not a character that is known to many people, even die-hard comic book fans since he only made appearances in very few issues.

It's interesting to see how the development of the project will play out in the coming months and whether it will actually move forward to production.
