The One Piece live-action series is out now on Netflix. But before its release, Netflix revealed that series creator Eiichiro Oda went undercover at the One Piece fan event in LA last week.

This means fans who attended the event came tantalizingly close to the franchise’s beloved creator. But in typical Oda fashion, his appearance at the event was unknown to pretty much everyone.

Oda stealthily attending the event is on-brand for him, especially as he’s one of the many manga artists who keep a low profile.

Eiichiro Oda is easily one of the most famous manga authors of all time. After all, One Piece is the bestselling manga of all time with millions of fans across the world.

Despite how popular Oda is, he has always kept a low profile. While there have been many interviews with Oda, he has never officially shown his face.

For instance, he gave a Japanese TV program a tour of his house last year. He appeared on screen, but his face was obscured in the broadcast.

This is also what happened with Netflix’s recent video where Oda met Iñaki Godoy.

Oda isn’t the only manga artist who doesn’t show his face. In fact, most manga artists today don’t show their faces in promotional materials or videos for privacy reasons.

Of course, there are some images of Oda floating around online, but many of them are unconfirmed, or they’re too old to be accurate.

It’s impressive how Oda has managed to go incognito all these years, even as the author of the biggest manga series of all time.

Just recently, Netflix shared a new video showing Oda going undercover once again, this time at the big One Piece live-action fan event in LA.

Specifically, the video showed Oda’s point of view as he enjoyed the sights and sounds of the fan event, including the various attractions and even the screening. Check it out here:

Oda making a personal appearance is a surprise, but it makes sense given how involved he is in the series. This contrasts with most other live-action anime adaptations which don’t involve their original creators.

The One Piece live-action series is streaming now exclusively on Netflix, with all eight episodes of the series available globally.
