MCU fans recently got their very glimpse of the upcoming series Echo as Marvel Studios finally released the first trailer which suggests a darker and more violent tone than any other MCU projects in the past.

It is also set to be the next appearance of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) following her debut in Hawkeye. It will also bring back Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin and Charlie Cox's Daredevil, who was briefly seen in the trailer.

Most of the plot details are currently under wraps, but the trailer has hinted that it will explore the Native American origins of the titular character and her tumultuous relationship with Kingpin.

Some fans are also curious whether the character will gain powers similar to the comics where she has the uncanny ability to copy other people's movements as well as having "photographic reflexes."

Now, it looks like that might not happen at all as it sounds like she will have different powers when we see her in the series.

During the press event for the series last October (via Variety), Echo director Sydney Freeland revealed that the titular character will have different powers compared to the comics. However, she didn't divulge what her newly-introduced skillset will be.

"Her power in the comic books is that she can copy anything, any movement, any whatever. It’s kind of lame. I will say, that is not her power. I’ll just kind of leave it at that," she teased.

Insider @CanWeGetToast sheds some light on X regarding Echo's new powers in the upcoming series where they claim that the character will be "empowered by the Choctaw women that came before her."

"She will have several different abilities that manifest when she’s threatened. Each power belonging to a different ancestor," they added.

Based on what we're hearing, it sounds like they made the changes to Echo's powers in order to be more reflective of her Choctaw ancestry. Besides, it would have also been too similar to Taskmaster, who was already introduced in Black Widow.

While this may discourage some fans, it should also be pointed out that the MCU has always been notorious for making changes from the source material such as the powers of the characters so it's not surprising that they went a similar route for Echo in the upcoming series.

It is interesting to see how it all shapes out once we watch the entire series and, hopefully, her new powers will make sense when we see it in context.

Echo is set to premiere all five episodes on Disney+ and Hulu on January 10, 2024.
