Isaki and Nakami first meet and bond over their insomnia which disrupts their daily school life.
When Ganta Nakami, a grumpy student, visits the Astronomy Club's now abandoned observatory -- the rumored home of a ghost -- he finds Magari Isaki hidden and asleep.
Apparently, Isaki started the ghost rumor because she suffers from insomnia as much as Nakami does, and she uses the old observatory to take a nap when she inevitably passes out from exhaustion.
After an awkward instance where Nakami and Isaki get locked into the observatory together, the two students bond over their difficulties and form an unlikely friendship.
Instead of spending their sleepless nights alone, they start hanging out, and eventually, opening up about the deeper reasons behind their insomnia and mental health struggles.

Do Isaki and Nakami End Up Together?
While it's early to tell how much the anime is going to cover, the Insomniacs After School manga confirms that Nakami and Isaki end up together after a lot of buildup.
Over the course of the slice-of-life series, Nakami and Isaki come closer and share personal information, including the deeper reasons that affect their sleep.
Isaki was born with a heart defect, and only after several surgeries was she able to live a normal life.
The knowledge that she could get worse at any time causes her to dread sleeping for fear of never waking up.
As her bond with Nakami blooms, she learns to feel more comfortable sleeping when he's around.
Eventually, Nakami and Isaki fall in love, though it takes them a while to address their feelings.
After their first kiss, Nakami finally tells Isaki that he loves her. This results in a very heartwarming scene, wherein Isaki -- whose love for photography is known already from the start -- asks him to take a photo of her during what she considers the happiest moment of her life.
Insomniacs After School is heartwarming in its exploration of first love, companionship, and young people's mental health.
